Horror – Opening Scene
For this project I was chosen as a cameraman.
To help the “crew” I’ve decided to do variety of different shots but to make it look like a typical horror opening the more close-up and extreme close-up I’ve used the better, which I did. I also did quite a large sequence using POV shot because I’ve tried to emphasise the fear of the unknown in our character and to put the audience in her position.
To make it look even more professional we’ve used quite a lot of speeded up editing, because most of the horror movies I’ve seen contain this exact editing.
We’ve used many different props such as: candles, mirrors, dead flowers, fake blood, handmade Pandora’s box, pentagrams, crucifix, incense and a white robe which our character putted on, we chose white because it symbolises the purity and the innocence of our character but after she has a black out (fade to black editing) everything goes on the white robe and she isn’t that innocent from that moment on.
To make the sequence engage us and make us experience the fear even more our editor chose to use threatening sound (non-diagetic sound) combined with slow motion. The effect from that came out really good because the POV shot that I took became like our character started to getting dizzy looking at the table with all the demonic stuff on it hearing this devilish sound in her head.
The speeded up editing comes in after she faded and it seems like everything just slams into her. This is really well presented because we didn’t just used speeded up editing but the extreme close-up of her eye opening suddenly as the sound stops. This look in her eye is showing us that she fears but she doesn’t know from what. She begins to look around in her white robe covered in blood from nowhere, she is panicking.
I think this really helped us work in group and share many different ideas for the sequence and at the end, everything came out more than good, I think these were the strengths in our group.
If there’s anything I can improve I can hardly think of anything but I would like us to try a bit more different shots and angles and probably a bit more HORROR editing.
