Burining Secrets - Evaluation

AS Level Media Horror – Opening Scene For this project I was chosen as a cameraman. To help the “crew” I’ve decided to do variety of different shots but to make it look like a typical horror opening the more close-up and extreme close-up I’ve used the better, which I did. I also did quite a large sequence using POV shot because I’ve tried to emphasise the fear of the unknown in our character and to put the audience in her position. To make it look even more professional we’ve used quite a lot of speeded up editing, because most of the horror movies I’ve seen contain this exact editing. We’ve used many different props such as: candles, mirrors, dead flowers, fake blood, handmade Pandora’s box, pentagrams, crucifix, incense and a white robe which our character putted on, we chose white because it symbolises the purity and the innocence of our character but after she has a black out (fade to black editing) everything goes on the white robe and she isn’t that innocent from that moment on. To make the sequence engage us and make us experience the fear even more our editor chose to use threatening sound (non-diagetic sound) combined with slow motion. The effect from that came out really good because the POV shot that I took became like our character started to getting dizzy looking at the table with all the demonic stuff on it hearing this devilish sound in her head. The speeded up editing comes in after she faded and it seems like everything just slams into her. This is really well presented because we didn’t just used speeded up editing but the extreme close-up of her eye opening suddenly as the sound stops. This look in her eye is showing us that she fears but she doesn’t know from what. She begins to look around in her white robe covered in blood from nowhere, she is panicking. I think this really helped us work in group and share many different ideas for the sequence and at the end, everything came out more than good, I think these were the strengths in our group. If there’s anything I can improve I can hardly think of anything but I would like us to try a bit more different shots and angles and probably a bit more HORROR editing.

Being A Director

5 Question Questionnaire on Thrillers

This questionnaire is being carried out so that I can get an idea of what excites people about thrillers if they watch them and what puts them off if they don't.

Questionee: Edwin Cosco, Age 26
1)
Q)Do you like thriller movies?
A)Not particularly.

2)
Q) What don't you like about them?
A) They can be a bit slow and I'm really impatient when it comes to films.

3)
Q) How do you feel whilst watching them?
A) Irritated because the action doesn't start straight away and they always seem to have a cliche' storyline and typical characters.

4)
Q) Are there any that you have been able to enjoy?
A) No, but if I had to pick one that I extremely destest it would be Man on Fire because for about an hour there is absolutely nothing thrilling about it and I felt 100% disconnected from the whole thing.

5)
Q) What do you expect to see/feel when watching a thriller?
A) I expect to see straight foward action and then journey back to the root of the story to raise an enigma and get me thinking straight away. I would want to feel exhillerated and involved otherwise see they serve no purpose.

Birdseye shot of the girl laying down, covered in blood and dirt with her eyes shut.
Camera moves in gradually meeting an extreme close up on her eyes.
Her eyes open.
Fades out.
Off screen chanting and flashing images of prehistoric medieval demons, witches and devils; followed by a black screen with titles. This repeats for as long as the titles take in a back and forth motion.
Camera cuts to a box in a dark room surrounded by candles in front of an upside down cross. As camera circles the room it uncovers images of evil.
When the camera returns to the place where the box was, the box has gone with the sound of a whip being whipped in the air without the hitting sound.
Blackout.

Synopsis Of The Complete Film

Title: La Caja Terroriffica
Director: Saskia Calliste
Producer: Mercedes Galindo
Cinematographer: Julian and Emil
Editor: Zubeida and Saskia Calliste

Characters: Young Girl, Village People, Witches, A Priest School Children
Plot:
Years ago, in a Christian village, girls were burned at the stake for believing in the devil. They took their possessions and placed them in a box in an abandonned house, which was cursed by the evil. The girls who were burned were not believers but girls who tried to warn the villages of evil. The devil would entice them with sweet music, to get them to open the box so hell could be unleashed and the only way to stop the terror on the town would be to sacrifice the one who opened it.

Years later, a girl runs from school into the woods where the house resides as she gets bullied and comes across the box. In curiosity she opens it and history repeats itself bringing every ones worst fears to life with a vengeance. The girl goes on a quest to find out how to stop the force of evil and realises the only way is through the sacrifice of the one who opened it- herself.

Beginning: The beginning of the film starts with the future of what has happened her after the box has been opened and all the terror has already been unleashed. Then it journeys back to the past of when she first opened the box but it does not show this. it shows her in the house and her first viewing of the box. During this time flashbacks of her at the end are shown at this time. After this has happened it would go back to the present which would establish the girls character and how she was different to everyone else- hence why she gets bullied. The beginning would then reveal her coming across the house in the woods and why that day was particularly different.
Middle: The middle of the film would reveal all the terror the box has caused on the town. As it is a small village suspicion immediately turns to the one who doesn't fit in and the one old wives of the village are certain is a witch due to similarities to the past town legends and those girls who were burned at the stake. Unable to handle the accusations of her actions which she has committed by mistake, she flees the village trying to find a way to stop the forces of evil and comes acrossd troubling encounters on the way.
End: Whilst on her quest she comes across the vicar who surprisingly tries to help her as he has come across this issue before and who believes her innocence. He unwillingly reveals to her the truth that her death is the only way to save the town. He encourages her sacrifice but she is determined to find another way. In doing so she is ambushed by the idea of failure and that sacrifice is the only way, death by burning on the stake and sacrificing her soul to save the town enduring in eternity with the devil. In what she thinks is her last moments on this earth, the sacrifice fails as she is too innocent and a good force provails over the bad.

Examples of Extreme Close Ups

Another shot we used in our sequence is an extreme close up. These are usually used to reveal something important in the sequence. They are almost used as a warning, alerting the audience to focus and remember that thing they have just be shown. In our opening sequence, the extreme close up is followed by a POV Shot. Our extreme close up on our actresses eye, was then used to alert the audience that the next shot being used was through the eyes of 'this girl' that the audience right now know nothing about.

Example Of POV Shot

This is an example of a POV Shot which is one of the main shots that we used in our opening sequence. It shows us what the exactly what the person is seeing through their eyes only. This shot can be used in many different ways. For example a POV Shot could be used to show us the sudience what one character thinks of another. The way a POV shot is used depends on the story line of ones film/opening sequence. For example our POV Shots are used so that the audience can see exactly what the character sees in the film and nothing else. It exposes things not even she can believe which helps build that character, audience relationship needed for a connection to be made towards the film.

300 Movie, font analysis

The font and the colour of writing in the title sequence can often tell us what the movie will be based on and also how the writing is formed.
The red writing for a start signifies blood so we know that it is going to be movie about brutal killing.

The font is sharpened off on edges this suggests to me that sharp weapons are involved such as knives / swords.

Title Sequence example

Great example of one of the best title sequences made.

History of title sequences

The sequence includes all the names of title designers who had a revolutionary impact on the history and evolution of the title sequence.
The names of the title designers all refer to specific characteristics of the revolutionary titles that they designed. This film refers to elements such as the cut and shifted characters of Saul Bass’ Psycho title, the colored circles of Maurice Binder’s design for Dr. No and the contemporary designs of Kyle Cooper and Danny Yount.

Opening Sequence - Music

I thought that this original score form True Blood (composed by Nathan Barr) could be used for the title sequence of our opening sequence. i think that the instruments come together perfectly creating a dark, ominous atmosphere. The harp set off the pace followed by a cello that plays repeatedly with the violin being played in screetcy internations. Together the instruments create a creepy, eerie sound and creates mystery as it makes the listener wonder whats happening by creating tension.

Hide and Seek Movie Trailer (2005)

I think this is a good example of a thriller movie as up until the near end off the movie, the audience are unaware of the cause of the events that take place throughout the movie. The audience are made to question who the antagonist might be. The plot thickens as the story revolves around 'Emily' and 'Charlie' playing a deadly game of hide and seek. It isn't until the last part of the movie that we find out who 'Emily's' friend 'Charlie' is and the story unravels creating an 'aha!' moment for the audience.

The movie is full of tense moments that keeps the viewer engaged and makes them want to find out what's going on ad who will be the next victim.

BBFC guidelines of our production

In my opinion I think that the age rating that is most appropriate for our film production is 18. This I believe to be the most convient so that there aren't any restrictions to what can be shown and what cannot be shown. After all the entire concept of this film will revolve around the concept of self sacrafice and any audience under the age of eighteen may be influenced into committing suicide.

It will also appeal to an older audience, thus making it appeal to a mass one as well.

The Usual Suspects Movie Trailer (1995)

This is a good example of a thriller because the throughout the whole film the plot thickens and not all is at it seems. A strong stroyline develops leaving the audience thinking what is going to happen next. The strong introduction of new characters and their backgrounds lets the audience know that they are going to have to pay attention to them as they are going to be a big part of the story. All this highlighted are basic conventions of a thriller movie. The Usual Suspects is a crime thriller established throught the events that occur in the film.
